Avoiding Medical Debt as a Soldier

How to protect your family’s finances from medical costs

Active duty soldiers have Tricare, so you are not stuck with the same medical bills civilians face. But that does not mean you are fully protected. Dental, fertility, or specialty care for family members can still create surprise bills. Without savings, those costs can turn into debt that follows you for years.

Where Medical Debt Can Happen

  • Dental care for soldiers or dependents

  • IVF and fertility treatments

  • Specialty care for kids or spouses

  • Out-of-network or uncovered treatments

Steps to Avoid Medical Debt

  • Save at least $1,000 a month by Year 2 to create a cushion for family costs

  • Always use military clinics and programs when available

  • Ask about payment plans before turning to credit cards

  • Keep your credit protected in case a bill slips through

The $56K Plan works here too. By Year 3, soldiers who save $1,000 a month plus 5% in TSP have more than enough buffer to handle family medical needs without debt.

Final Word

Tricare covers most care, but it does not cover everything. Soldiers who save $1,000 a month and use benefits wisely never get caught off guard by family medical costs.
